Summary: My precious, beautiful baby
Comment: The machine for those who really love espresso. With a little practice and good quality coffee, you can make the best espresso possible. No automatic, high-tech machine can match the quality of this traditional machine. You need to feel the pressure of the water going through the grinds to really get the perfect espresso, and for that you must have the hand-pulled lever. I worked in Italian, family-owned coffee houses in San Francisco in the 70s and 80s, and those purists used this machine. It is a tool that one must learn to use, but it is the right tool for the job!

Summary: Great espresso maker, if used as a tool, not an automat
Comment: I have used a Europiccola for several years now, and have pulled many a great shot of espresso from it. There is no rocket science to using it, but it does require some initial experimentation to get the grind and tamp right. It took me five or six shots to get pretty darn good espresso, and maybe one or two misses whenever I try out some new coffee, or a new roast (I roast at home).

There is plenty to love about it apart from the quality of the coffee it allows you to produce. It is simple, with very few moving parts, nearly all of which can be serviced by anyone who can operate a screwdriver. Not that they need to be---this thing is built like a tank, and at least mine has not have any failures so far. (One previous reviewer calls it "somewhat fragile"---I don't know what he expects from kitchen appliances, but I don't think we own many kitchen tools that are more sturdy than the La Pavoni.) Every so often you may want to take out the piston for some deeper cleaning (two screws to be unscrewed), but other than that maintenance is a breeze. That is in no small part the result of its simplicity---only one outward-facing surface ever comes in touch with coffee grounds, so cleaning the machine is mainly a matter of wiping it down.

It is, of course, also quite pretty and decorative, escpecially the all-chrome model (which I would recommend to get). But its main value is in producing great coffee. Many of the negative comments I read about lever machines seem to come from folks that probably bought theirs with the wrong set of expectations. It is NOT a Jura/Capresso-style push-button coffee automat, and for anyone whose ideal is a machine like that, it is probably the wrong choice. There is nothing wrong with a super-automatic, they can make decent coffee, but a lever machine affords an immediacy and control that those machines don't, and it is the right choice for those that enjoy that sort of thing, either because they just like the activity in itself, or because they strive for outstanding results that require that kind of control. Think electric shaver vs straight razor---at some level they perform similar functions, and the former is the one that gets you more easily to some kind of acceptable result, but mastering the latter is a reward in itself, and you need to in order to get a truly great result (you won't see a professional barber shaving someone with a Norelco...). To those who do not find lever machines appealing, a good (!) pump machine might be a good compromise between control and convenience---it permits direct control over grind and tamp, while automating the pumping of the water.

Does the Europiccola have downsides? Some, yes. Since it always heats the entire reservoir of water, it takes a little while for it to get ready to produce coffee. Also, the 8-cup version (which is what I have) won't allow you to serve larger crowds very quickly. I drink straight espresso, so I have no use for the steam wand, but I heard that it can be a little awkward to use, and that the 8-cup model does not have an awful lot of steam. Finally, I wished it had a larger basket that would actually permit double shots, the one it has is somewhat on the small side.

This is a great machine for someone who (1) cares about making really great espresso or (2) likes the idea of a simple manual machine, or ideally both. For someone expecting push-button convenience, it might turn out to be a rather expensive piece of kitchen decoration.

Summary: Happy Customer
Comment: The basic instructions for use (written and dvd) are a good starting point. You will have to experiment with fineness of grind, tamping pressure, timing of the lever in the up position and speed of lowering the lever but the end result is well worth the effort. It's fun to use and I always look forward to my morning double shot.

Summary: For the passionate
Comment: Let me preface this review by saying that this machine can make the WORST cup of coffee you'll ever drink. "Now," you say, "why would I buy a machine that makes terrible coffee?"

Because the difference between the terrible cup of coffee and the delicious shot is YOU. It's YOUR skill that gets you the great shot. Nothing wrong with feeling good about yourself to start the day.

I've had one of these little things for about five years now. I've got my grind down. Got my tamp down. Got my timing down. When the coffee first appears as I pull, I know how hard or soft to press, how fast or how slow. I know what the "mouse's tail" is, what the shot should sound like as it fills the cup, what the color of the crema should be.

If you're a Starbucks fan and you prefer West Coast style espresso with lots of milk, there's no need to go here. Hey, there's nothing wrong with West Coast style, but there are easier ways to get there than through this machine. If you're like me and you savor the smoothness, body, sweetness and bouquet of good northern-Italian style espresso, this is the machine for you.

The Europiccola is a machine for people with passion, people whose morning coffee borders on a sacrament. And yes, to receive the sacrament, the machine will extract its penance from you on the way. Expecting a great shot first time out? Don't. Expecting a "very good year"? Your first shot will be closer to Goodyear. So begins your journey.

I'll confess to having swum upstream from this seemingly impossible little machine to blending and roasting my own espresso beans. So my morning cup may start its journey a day or two ahead of turning La Pavoni on.

Worth every second of it. There's nothing that adds to the pleasure of the shot like knowing you did it yourself.

Summary: An espresso machine for perfectionists!
Comment: I have owned this machine for over ten years and everyday when I make my morning cappuccino I love it more. You can spend more for a machine that measures the coffee, tamps it, pulls the water through and steams the milk for you, but you can tip the kids behind the counter at Starbucks and they'll do the same thing. Making espresso should be a little art and a little science and this machine an impeccable balance of the two. If you aren't the kind of person who takes joy in mixing the perfect martini, making a risotto that whispers with flavor, or whipping a meringue to impossibly tall peaks, this probably isn't the machine for you.

The La Pavoni is for the person who will find tremendous joy in going to the lengths required to make a perfect cappuccino by hand everyday. (And don't bother using anything less than Illy Cafe coffee in it.)
