Winner of the European iF Design Award, the Canteen double wall glasses can be use the whole year round. You can use them for your cold drinks in summer and hot drinks in winter. They are made of a very strong but yet light weight glass (borosilicate glass). They can safely go in the dishwasher and microwave. No coaster needed. Bodum's insulated glassware is made from durable Borosilicate glass. Borosilicate glass is a strong heat-resistant glass that weighs less than traditional glassware. Used to make scientific lab glass, borosilicate glass (medical grade glass) is stronger than traditional "soda-lime" glass and can be used for everything from drinkware to cookware. Some people may perceive the glass to be "thin" as they hold it. It is important to understand the difference between borosilicate and soda lime glass. Borosilicate glass doesn't need to be as thick as traditional glass to be just as strong. Borosilicate is simply a different type of glass that is resistant to temperature swings and scratching. Because the particles are held together so tightly, borosilicate glass is dishwasher safe and will not become cloudy over time; you can rest assured that after 100 cycles, the glass will be as clear as the day you bought it. Simply treat it as you would any glass product and it will stand up to every day use. Dishwasher & microwave safe.Bodum insulated, double wall glass i

Customer Rating: Summary: Cheers! Comment: I bought a pair of these because they were the mainstay in my favorite Boston area cafe (the Diesel!) and since relocating to Arizona, hot coffee in clear glasses has been missing from my life. These glasses are beautiful to look at, a pleasure to hold and drink from and insulate you from both cold and hot drinks so you can comfortably lift a hot coffee without getting burned or put a tall cold one on a wooden table without a coaster. Also because of the double walled glass, they look cool - the drink seems to "float" inside the glass. But be careful - they are glass and not plastic so they'll break with an impact on a hard floor, countertop or sink. Its best to wash them by themselves (impacting other dishes or pots will crack them!) And be aware that if you drop one (as I did, tragically) on a hard tile floor, you'll be finding glass in odd places for weeks and weeks!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Insulating Glasses Comment: These are great glasses. The ice in cold drinks last much longer than in a standard glass. This is my second purchase of these. Bought 4 previously as a test and cracked a couple but came back for 8 more! The one caveat is that they are more fragile that standard thicker walled glasses but they're great otherwise. Worth the tradeoff in my opinion. The only thing that would make them better would be if they were unbreakable!
Customer Rating: Summary: Mine don't have holes in bottom Comment: My wife and I have been using various Bodum glasses for a couple of years. We've been using the "Canteen" 13oz glasses predominantly for hot beverages - daily. More rarely, we do use one for cold beer. Personally, I love drinking hot tea and coffee out of these glasses because it adds an extra sensory delight to the experience, namely, a visual enjoyment of the beverage through the clear glass. And yes, they are microwave and dishwasher safe. But, as far as washing these glasses go, I have to point out that there's NOT SUPPOSED to be a (open) hole in the bottom outer wall of the glass. One can see that there WAS a hole during the manufacturing of the product, but it's SUPPOSED to be SEALED - like mine have always been.
These glasses are basically made out of the same kind of glass used for laboratory test tubes. They don't expand or contract much from exposure to heat or cold and they ARE quite tough. However, they ARE glass, eh? My wife broke one about a year ago, and I broke another when the ceramic lid of a new teapot I was trying out fell out onto the glass as I was pouring tea. Well, that was a defect in the design of the teapot, and I stopped using that crappy teapot right away. Also, I ordered 8 Bodum glasses suitable for wine, and 2 of the 8 arrived broken! (But amazon did credit me.) It's because of this slight "nuisance" problem that I only gave them 4 stars. I still think they are worth it and am planning to order a couple more Canteen glasses today (as "spares" for if/when we break the ones we use everyday). But, again, if yours have an open hole in the bottom - they are defective and should be returned. Mine never have had.
Customer Rating: Summary: 27 days after receiving the order one glass is in the garbage Comment: Yikes. I had no idea these glasses wouldn't even last one month before chips and cracks began to appear. I've already had to throw one glass away. They work for the purpose I bought them for: to keep my drink ice cold. Unfortunately it appears these glasses are not built for every day use/ all day use. If you want a nice glass to use for only certain occasions this glass will work well. If you want a glass to use every day and all day long, I'd suggest you look elsewhere.
Customer Rating: Summary: great glasses Comment: I have owned 2 sizes (12 glasses total) for a year and a half and my first break was 2 days ago through my own inattention. I wasn't looking and hit the side of the stainless steel sink. If I had been paying attention this never would have happened. I wash them usually in the dishwasher but also by hand. I've NEVER had water get in between the 2 layers.
The glasses look good, dress up "every day" uses and I definitely will keep them among my glasses.
