Customer Rating: Summary: Love It Comment: The best thing about this is the steam wand, it makes the best foam and steamed milk, I use skim and it froths the best. I will never have to go to Starbucks again bec. I can recreate the same drinks at home with this machine.
I got a factory refurbished model for 129.00 which simply meant that it didn't come in the same box from the factory it was just a plain box. Every item was brand new. I have never owned an espresso machine and this was a great first time buy. I didn't even start drinking coffee until a couple of years ago and I'm in my middle 30's, thanks to Starbucks I'm an addict now, but I never got into coffee I went straight for espresso.
So back to the Ikon, bec. I've never actually made my own until this point I did have to learn how to do it, which took a couple of days trial and error. I save about 5 bucks a day making my drinks at home. I've only had the machine for a few weeks and each time the espresso is better and better. At first I didn't have that hard puck of fully extracted coffee it was all watery and I felt discouraged but it's happening less frequently now bec. I'm getting used to the machine. Let the machine heat up for a few minutes before you use it. Tamp properly and use the right grind of bean.
Buy yourself some fancy syrups and make your own cappuccinos and lattes, you'll be happy you did when you use the Ikon.
Customer Rating: Summary: Breville Ikon made my Christmas wish come true! Comment: I received the Breville Ikon 400 XL for Christmas this year. I was thrilled. I could hardly wait to use it. My father-in-law drove like the wind to the grocery store for beans and we were brewing shots all Christmas morning long. I have owned several cheap espresso machines (Mr. Coffee and Farberware) and needless to say they were less than mediocre. I have since discovered that steam brewed vs. bar pumps are obsolete. I have long envied my friend's Starbucks Barista. But stepping up to a better quality high-end machine was only a far off dream. Until my father-in-law got wind of it. He is the researcher of all researchers and reads manuals for fun. Lucky for me, my mother-in-law found this at an outlet mall and paid less than $200. I have seen many for closer to three hundred online.
I love this machine. It is absolutely beautiful! My favorite feature is hard to narrow down; there are so many. Let me begin:
1. Filter basket- It is extremely heavy and made of solid cast aluminum (I think) My last machine broke two times due to the cheap plastic/metal handle. This one features solid metal with a silicone grip so no surprise burns. Handle is wider for a real man. My husband does not know his own strength, and is always breaking things. This will be impossible with the solid metal. Also seals nicely to the machine. I have not heard nor seen any steam escaping. Seems very heavy duty.
2.I love the way the filters fit into the basket. They have a nice secure fit and a handy eject button when you are ready to wash them out. In other machines they fit loosely and fall out when you go to dump the grounds.
3. Nice big platform. Overflow tank/platform is easily removable and is extra big on top to fit two regular mugs. Also platform slides right off for easy emptying and- drumroll please.... there is a hidden drawer behind the overflow tank for tool storage! I think this may be my favorite thing so far. Anything with hidden compartments are so cool. The machine comes with a neat measuring spoon/tamper and cleaning tool. It has a tiny little pin for cleaning the basket holes and milk frother should they get clogged. Super cool!
4. The steam wand rotates on a ball. 360 degrees of milk frothing pleasure. allows for steaming milk on the machine platform(in the nice milk pitcher that comes with the machine) or for extra big mugs on the side. It moves so easily, I love it! Fully adjustable steam with the turn of a dial located on the side; you can even get hot water if you open the steam valve to max and press brew. This is great for tea drinkers. and the super frother is just that. Super frothy- in fact I have to remove it sometimes because it makes foam to well and my cup runneth over!!
5. I love that the water reservoir is in the front. It is not only super sleek and stylish. But easy to read, and easy to access. The water is sucked from a hose that siphons from above, not a drip on the bottom. Past machines I've had would leak all over the place because of the bottom gravity fed tanks. The hose will automatically lift up when you remove the tank and automatically reseat itself when you return the tank. neat.
6. Easy operation- three buttons that's it. power, brew, or steam. Also, the brew function has a special feature I hadn't heard of before. The manual says that when you press the brew button momentarily it will shoot a small amount of water to moisten the beans, followed by a pause, and then the brew. Advanced technology for the perfect brew and I use it every time(my guess is this is why grounds do not come out as a solid cake, as another reviewer complained. A cake is easier to dump out, but it is all going down the drain anyway, right? I personally like to put the grounds around my roses, they like it)
7. And last but not least, more than adequate clearance below the brew basket. This lets me brew directly in to my coffee cup. I warm the milk then brew- all in one mug. This is definitely a feature I will enjoy. I am very lazy and I love that I only have to use one mug. My old machines had very little clearance, and if the special cups were in the dishwasher, I would have to scour all over for something short to catch the espresso. I cannot count how many times I have wondered why no one had thought of this. No one had to my knowledge- until Breville.
Love this machine so far, and it is definitely worth the investment. Compared to my $3.50 mochas, I am saving a bundle.
Customer Rating: Summary: Died after only one month Comment: So, we were pretty happy with this machine after receiving it as a wedding gift. However, after only one month, the machine appears to have died - we can barely get two shots out (let alone two lattes). I've traded emails back and forth with Breville USA customer service - more to come on whether this situation will be resolved. I will update review after the outcome - but for now, warning to others considering buying this.
Customer Rating: Summary: Would buy again Comment: I'm impressed with this machines performance. I was concerned about buying a home espresso machine because I used to be a barista at a cafe and was a little spoiled by the professional equipment. However, I love using this one! It has a lot of great features-
-Great frothing wand, perfect froth every time, and I don't even use the frothing sleeve that comes with it. Also, it rotates really well.
-Great size for a kitchen counter top, plus the machine has a great little storage space hidden inside for accessories.
-Very sturdy and well built, especially the portafilter which seemed cheaply made on other machines in the same price range.
-I am loving the water storage container! Easy to see, and holds plenty of water for brewing shots and steaming milk
-The machine heats up quickly and is ready to brew right away.
-The brewing pitcher is a great size for the machine and can fit enough milk for a large to-go cup.
There are only a few things I don't like about this machine-
-It's impossible to pull a double shot evenly into two pitchers. This isn't a big deal for us since we almost always pull a double for each of us. If you need 2 single shots, brew them seperatly.
-The filters are a little difficult to get out of the head. The eject features only pushes it out so far, then you have to do the rest. Thank goodness I'm a girl have some nails!
-And last, the warming tray does not heat as well as I would like. It does alright once it's been on for a while, but doesn't heat cups enough to use as soon as the machine is ready to brew.
All in all, I am really enjoying this machine. If needed, I would purchase it again. It's really great for a home machine, and the price is good too. Hope this helps!
Customer Rating: Summary: Good espresso / takes lots of trial and error to get it right... Comment: Face it, a perfect cup is very subjective. With the Breville IKON it is an art form in which you are the artist and need to learn to be expressive with the medium. As mentioned finding the right grind of coffee beans, packing of the filter and draw times can be time consuming and the results frustrating. However, once you find the right combo, it comes out right every time. Care and cleaning is critical, so don't let things linger. This unit replaced an old Krups Allegro Espresso Makers - I have no regrets of the price premium of the Breville - although the Krups could produce more coffee at a time, the Breville wins hands down on quality.
